<<i'm glad people are picking up on it,>> jeff commented to
cmj on
idaho's four string guitars. their <<nonstandard guitar tunings are
key... they're all about hues and tints>> and the <<immense,
sad universe>> that makes up idaho's <<entirely new sort of music...
a sort of feedback jazz.>> (ap) the four string guitar and its various tunings happened as an accident of sorts. a <<very sterile looking>> fender squire was lying around, missing two strings and <<i tuned it up to something that sounded nice to me. it had a nice ring to it.>> idaho now play custom four string guitars made by john carruthers in venice, california. <<sometimes i think six strings is just too many strings.>> jeff told chris douridas of kcrw that a standard guitar was <<very intimidating to me,>> but the discovery of four strings and the <<personal approach>> (cmj) they allowed helped mold jeff martin into what ap described as <<a songwriting genius.>> <<four strings have been very good to me.>> | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

the tunings are given from the lowest pitch to the highest. they all fall into two general categories according to their registers, low or high. the lower register tunings can be thought of as derivatives of the deepest four strings on a six string guitar, and the higher register tunings can be considered derivatives of the highest four strings on a six string guitar. |
