UNDER THE VOLCANO
While on the subject of sad songs, I strongly suggest that you search out the delectable compilation, Shanti Project Collection, a set of rare and unreleased tracks by some of America’s most melancholy writers. Shanti Project is worth buying for the Red House Painter’s four previously unissued, superb quality demo recordings. This is a band that, for me, can do no wrong, so it’s a pleasure to hear new music after such a long hiatus. Also featured are fine contributions from Low (the quietest band on the planet), Idaho and Hayden. Indeed, Shanti is one solemn recording, but if you’re into “slow rock” this is some of the best around. An unexpected surprise is the inclusion of two songs by Misc, a San Francisco aggregate, that adds some spirit to the proceedings with their dense, sensually rhythmic guitar explorations.
