Idaho, Year After Year (Caroline)—There’s been quite a few rock bands recently who have been able to combine restrained guitar power with slow tempos to create achingly sad and marvelously affecting music, such as Red House Painters and Codeine.

After a few singles, Idaho gives us a full album of similar musical shades in Year After Year.

Revolving around a core duo consisting of bassist/vocalist Jeff Martin and guitarist John Berry, the band (currently a quartet) have nearly an hour’s worth of quiet, desperate beauty on display here.

Standout tracks include the very grand “Skyscrape” and “Let’s Cheat Death”, highlighted by a distant guitar chime. Quite a treasure.
