Idaho's Jeff Martin is a dab hand at slow, sad songs in the "slowcore" vein of Low, Red House Painters or Mark Eitzel, with a serious Neil Young fetish and a real way with melody. Los Angeles' Arlo, by contrast, serves up sunshiney slabs of bigfooted pop-rawk -- their Sub Pop album Stab the Unstoppable Hero has had power-chord fans cheering since the beginning of the year. Overall, an excellent bipolar bill.
